Prettier Now - Miracle Charm
Somewhere between the melancholic melodies of indie rock, the restless energy of post-punk and the enveloping textures of shoegaze, Prettier Now have gradually established a musical identity built around emotional vulnerability and guitar-driven intensity. With Miracle Charm, their second full-length album, scheduled for release on October 22, 2026, the New York project led by singer, guitarist and songwriter Christian Monte looks set to develop that approach with a sharper, more immediate sound.
Formed in 2020, Prettier Now first emerged with the EP Warmer, introducing a combination of dreamy atmospheres, distorted guitars and introspective songwriting. Their debut album, Perfect Crush, released on January 26, 2024, expanded those ideas into a more cohesive musical statement, balancing the hazy qualities of dream pop with the dynamic contrasts of alternative rock. Further releases followed, including Slow Blink in August 2025 and Born on a Cross in January 2026.
For Miracle Charm, Monte reunites with producer Noah Sullivan at Little Hollywood Studio in Howell, New Jersey, where Perfect Crush was also recorded. This continuing collaboration suggests a natural progression rather than a complete reinvention, with the project's familiar atmospheric qualities accompanied by a greater emphasis on abrasive guitars and emotionally direct performances.
The album's first single, “Beaming,” released on September 22, 2026, offers an intriguing introduction to this new chapter. Built around swirling, grunge-influenced guitars and a tightly driven rhythm section, the track combines the weight of 1990s alternative rock with the blurred melodic character of contemporary shoegaze. Monte's vocals gradually become more urgent, introducing a sense of emotional tension beneath the song's expansive instrumental textures.
Despite its energetic arrangement, Beaming explores a distinctly personal subject. Monte reflects on accumulated regrets, missed opportunities and the consequences of failing to recognise what matters before it is too late. The lyrics address misplaced priorities and the difficulties of emotional commitment, particularly the realisation that his own decisions prevented a romantic relationship from developing into something more meaningful.
This contrast between musical intensity and personal uncertainty is central to Prettier Now's appeal. The guitars provide a powerful, almost cathartic release, while the songwriting reveals a more vulnerable perspective, concerned with self-examination rather than simple romantic disappointment.
Mixed by Noah Sullivan and mastered by Matteo Debenedetti, Beaming also demonstrates the importance of production within the project's musical identity. Dense guitar layers retain their atmospheric depth without overwhelming the melodies, allowing the song to move naturally between introspection and instrumental force.
The broader direction suggested by Miracle Charm places Prettier Now within a contemporary alternative scene increasingly interested in reconnecting the raw emotional character of 1990s guitar music with the immersive qualities of shoegaze and dream pop. Yet Monte's songwriting remains the essential element, giving the distorted textures and restless rhythms a personal significance beyond their immediate sonic impact.
Following Perfect Crush, this second album represents another stage in the development of a project that continues to explore the relationship between emotional uncertainty and musical intensity.
With Miracle Charm, Prettier Now appear ready to embrace a more assertive side of their sound without losing the melancholy and melodic sensitivity that have defined their previous recordings. If Beaming is an indication of the album's direction, Christian Monte is turning personal regret into something both intimate and powerfully expressive.
